Water Heater Leaking? 5 Steps to Take Right Now
A leaking water heater can flood a garage in hours. Here is exactly what to do before help arrives, and when to call.
Finding water around your water heater is stressful. The good news: a few quick steps can prevent serious damage while a HOTCO technician is on the way.
Do these five things now
- Shut off the cold water supply valve on top of the tank.
- For gas units, turn the gas control knob to OFF or PILOT. For electric units, switch off the breaker.
- Open a nearby hot water faucet to relieve pressure in the tank.
- Move boxes, stored items and anything valuable away from the water.
- Take a photo of the rating label on the side of the tank. It helps us bring the right replacement.
Where is the leak coming from?
A drip from a fitting, the temperature and pressure relief valve or the drain valve can often be repaired. Water coming from the bottom of the tank itself almost always means the inner tank has rusted through, and replacement is the only safe fix.
